Shutter Island, Forensic Psychology & Lobotomies, Oh My!

As some of you might know I'm in the process of pursuing my master's degree in Forensic Psychology, what is it, you ask?  (Every person inevitably does).  Forensic Psychology is essentially the study and etiology (cause) of the deviant individual - that sounded so smart. lol.

Recently Kip & I went and saw Shutter Island which was AMAZING.  The bonus?  It was centered around Forensic Psychology and the early introduction of Thorazine (antipsychotic/neuroleptic drug) as a use for mental illness and psychotic diseases, as well as some references to lobotomies.

J'Adore: The Twilight Saga

A little story about me jumping on the Twilight Express:

About a year ago, everyone was going crazy over the release of  Twilight on DVD.  Both my sister (who was a huge fan of the books) and my co-worker insisted that I must READ THE BOOKS FIRST!  (For fear of certain death if I didn't), I took their advice and borrowed the first book from my co-worker.  I was hooked.  Skeptic that I was, I was instantaneously drawn in, I read Twilight in no more than 5 hours, and immediately drove to Barnes & Noble and bought the rest of the collection which I voraciously devoured over the next 2 days.  Yes, I read all four in less than 2 days.  Sad to see it end, I then proceeded to watch Twilight (the movie).  While not exactly sticking to the book, Catherine Hardawicke (the director) did a great job with her interpretation of the book.  (If you want to watch it check out HBO/Showtime/Starz on the weekend, they play it ALL the time).

I Can Do Bad All By Myself

So last night we went out and caught Tyler Perry's new movie, I Can Do Bad All By Myelf.

WOWWWWWW....

I always love Tyler Perry's stuff, and who doesn't love Madea?!

This movie was incredible. The songs in it were amazing and there was a significant part of the movie that took place in church - like most Tyler Perry movies - but for whatever reason this one took the cake.

As a huge fan of the plays, when I saw Meet the Browns in the theatre it just couldn't touch Mr. Brown's performance in the play. While still very enjoyable, it didn't really compare to the play. I was anticipating the same from I Can Do Bad All By Myself. But whaaaaaaaaaat.....was I surprised!

I LOVED Taraji P. Henson's performance, and I ABSOLUTELY ADORED the musical numbers in the movie. Mary J. Blige looked sublime as Tanya, and although you can take her out the hood - you sure can't take the hood outta Mary. lol. She was doin it, don't hurt em Mary!

So my point is this: If you have the time and some money (Hey, matinees are cheap or check your local theatre for discount ticket night - yes, they exist) go out and support a GOOD black film.

Tyler Perry and Madea can get my money any day of the week!
